Washington: In a major relief for the Donald Trump administration, a federal appeals court on Thursday reinstated the recent tariffs introduced by the US President, a day after a trade court said that Trump exceeded in powers in imposing duties.
Earlier, the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit ordered the pausing of the lower court’s ruling. It also asked plaintiffs to respond in the case by June 5 and the administration by June 9. The Wednesday ruling had threatened to delay in the imposition of tariffs from most US trading partners as well as tariffs on goods from countries like Mexico, Canada, and China.
What trade court noted earlier
In its ruling, the trade court had noted that the constitution of the country gave Congress, and not the President, the right to levy taxes and tariffs. It noted that the President had exceeded hi power by invoking the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.
However, senior officials in the Trump administration said that they were not upset by the court’s ruling, as they expected the effect.
It may be noted here that Trump has threatened the use of tariffs against imports og goods from every other country, a strategy that he downplayed. The ruling had not interfered with any negotiations with top trading partners that have already been scheduled in the coming days.
Donald Trump hails Musk
Meanwhile, a day after billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk announced stepping down as an advisor to the US President, Donald Trump announced that both will hold a press conference on Friday. “This will be his last day, but not, because he will always be with us, helping all the way,” Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Elon is terrific!”
