New Delhi: Amid rising tensions between India and Pakistan, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Friday held a telephone conversation with Pakistan’s Army chief General Asim Munir urging both sides to pursue de-escalation and dialogue.
In an official statement issued by the US Department of State on Saturday, spokesperson Tammy Bruce confirmed the call, stating: “Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with Pakistani Army Chief Asim Munir earlier today. He continued to urge both parties to find ways to de-escalate and offered US assistance in starting constructive talks in order to avoid future conflicts.”
Pakistani air bases hit by Indian forces
The call comes at a time of intensifying military activity between the two South Asian neighbours. According reports, at least four Pakistani airbases were struck by Indian forces in the early hours of Saturday, after a major escalation by Islamabad. Pakistan on Friday launched drones on multiple locations across the border states.
Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia has also stepped into diplomatic efforts, with Riyadh expressing concern over the deteriorating situation. The Saudi government announced it was working to facilitate dialogue between India and Pakistan, aiming to end current military confrontations and promote the resolution of disputes through diplomatic channels.
