New Delhi: Amid rising tensions between India and Pakistan, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Friday held a telephone conversation with Pakistan’s Army chief General Asim Munir urging both sides to pursue de-escalation and dialogue.

In an official statement issued by the US Department of State on Saturday, spokesperson Tammy Bruce confirmed the call, stating: “Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with Pakistani Army Chief Asim Munir earlier today. He continued to urge both parties to find ways to de-escalate and offered US assistance in starting constructive talks in order to avoid future conflicts.”

The call comes at a time of intensifying military activity between the two South Asian neighbours. According reports, at least four Pakistani airbases were struck by Indian forces in the early hours of Saturday, after a major escalation by Islamabad.
