New Delhi: The recent expansion of the Schengen Area, welcoming Bulgaria and Romania as new members, marked a significant milestone in European integration. As the barrier rose, a stray dog calmly walked across from Hungary into Romania, becoming, quite unintentionally, the first creature to cross this newly opened border.

The symbolic removal of border controls between member states was celebrated across the continent. The event, captured on video and widely shared across social media, showcased the moment when the border barrier lifted, signifying the official opening of crossings between Hungary and Romania.

This unscheduled arrival was met with enthusiastic applause from border officials who had gathered to celebrate the Schengen expansion. The heartwarming moment, packed with clapping and cheers, quickly went viral, accumulating over 300,000 views and sparking widespread joy and comments on social media platforms.

“Stray dog accidentally becomes the first to cross the Romania-Hungary border after Romania became a full member of the European Union’s Schengen area. The dog perfectly timed the entrance as the checkpoint barrier lifted up. The animal received a warm welcome as border guards started clapping,” read the caption.

The Schengen Area, a cornerstone of European integration, allows for passport-free travel among its member states. Bulgaria and Romania’s accession marks a substantial expansion of this free movement zone, enabling their citizens to travel to other Schengen countries without undergoing border checks.
