Washington: Responding to a viral video showing him engaging in a friendly chat with Barack Obama at former president Jimmy Carter’s funeral, US President-elect Donald Trump has said the two leaders probably like each other despite their different ideologies.
A surprising moment of camaraderie between two political rivals, Donald Trump and Barack Obama, captured widespread attention on social media on Thursday.
Speaking about the interaction at his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida on Friday, Trump said, “I said, ‘Boy, they look like two people that like each other.’ And we probably do.” Despite their differing political philosophies, Trump noted that they “got along” and enjoyed the ceremony.

The occasion was the state funeral for President Jimmy Carter, held at Washington’s National Cathedral. The event brought together five living former U.S. presidents, including Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and outgoing President Joe Biden.
Vice President Kamala Harris, who lost the contentious 2024 election to Trump, was also in attendance. While she seemed intrigued by the exchange between Trump and Obama, she did not approach Trump during the service.
The history between Trump and Obama is marked by sharp criticism, including Trump’s promotion of the birther conspiracy and frequent attacks on the Obamas. However, in an unexpected shift last August, Trump praised Obama, describing him as “a nice gentleman” and expressing respect for the Obamas, according to CNN.
The funeral served as a moment of national unity just days before Trump’s inauguration on January 20. President Carter was celebrated for his integrity, humanitarian efforts, and pivotal foreign policy achievements. Outgoing President Biden delivered a eulogy that honoured Carter’s vision and character.
