Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau resigned from his post on Monday after dissent in the party and domestic pressure over a host of issues. Trudeau served as Canadian PM for 11 years. Now, there are several for Canada’s top job and one among them is Indian-origin Transport Minister Anita Anand. Pierre Poilievre, Chrystia Freeland, Mark Carney, are other prospective candidates for the top job.
Here is a brief profile of Anita Anand
- The 57-year-old lawyer was first elected as the Member of Parliament from Oakville in 2019.
- Anita Anand was born in rural Kentville, Nova Scotia, in Canada. She moved to Ontario in 1985. She has four children with her husband John. The couple raised their children in Oakville.
- Anita’s parents-mother Dr Saroj Ram and Father SV (Andy) served as doctors in Canada. Dr Saroj died in 2014. Anita has two siblings named Gita and Sonia Anand. Sonia is a doctor.
- Previously, Anita Anand served as President of the Treasury Board, Minister of National Defence, and Minister of Public Services and Procurement.
- While she served as Public Services and Procurement Minister from 2019 to 2021, Anita was involved in vaccine procurement, personal protective equipment, and other COVID-19 related contracts for Canadians.
- During her role as Canada’s Defence Minister, Anita Anand made comprehensive efforts to provide military assistance and train Ukrainian armed forces after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
- Anita has also worked as a lawyer, scholar, researcher and a legal academic. She also served as a law professor at the University of Toronto.
- The Indian-origin Canadian minister Anita Anand also taught law at Yale Law School, Queen’s University, and Western University.
- Anita secured a BA degree in Political Studies from Queen’s University. She also holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Jurisprudence from University of Oxford.
