Dhaka: In a major development in Bangladesh, Interim Government chief Muhammad Yunus has threatened to resign from his post. The threat came amid protests by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and tensions with the Army chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman. It is believed that Yunus has been unable to handle the affairs of the country properly. There have been reports of a rise in cases related to theft, violence, and anti-minority incidents in recent times.
It is believed that Yunus is quite close to four persons, who have a major role to play in Yunus’s loss of popularity and support in the country in recent times. As per reports, people of the country are quite upset that the affairs of the country are being run by Yunus and these four.
Know who these four are?
Khalilur Rahman: Khalilur Rahman is the internal affairs advisor in the interim government. Apart from these, he is also playing the role of NSA. His current role is very important considering the atmosphere that has been created in Bangladesh against the Yunus government. People are angry with the number of steps taken by him. Among them include the decision to allow Pakistan’s entry into Bangladesh and building a corridor to Rakhine for the Rohingyas. On Thursday, BNP too demanded his resignation. The party has also threatened not to support the interim government if Khalilur is not removed.
Army Chief Zaman: Bangladesh’s Army Chief Waqar-uz-Zaman was considered close to Yunus. When Sheikh Hasina left the country, Zaman played an important role in making Yunus the Chief Advisor of the Interim Government, but the relationship between the two deteriorated since the beginning of this year. This month Zaman stopped from going abroad at the airport in the name of clearance. Speaking to reporters, Zaman noted that elections must be held by December this year as only an elected government can make policies.
Khaleda Zia: Former PM Khaleda Zia returned to Dhaka from London earlier this month. As soon as Khaleda arrived in Dhaka, her party became active. Her party BNP is the largest party in Bangladesh. BNP has put pressure on Yunus to hold elections in December and remove three advisors.
Dhaka Mayor Ishrak: Once considered close to Yunus, but now he has turned against the interim chief. The biggest reason is believed to be the decision of the Yunus government against Ishrak. Yunus’ interim government reportedly did not want Ishrak to become the mayor of Dhaka. Ishrak approached the High Court against this, which gave the decision in his favor. Meanwhile, Ishrak was also successful in gathering people on the streets of Dhaka.
