New Delhi: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, speaking at the Munich Security Conference, urged the creation of a European army, emphasising that Russia shows no signs of seeking a peaceful resolution to the ongoing war. He highlighted Ukraine’s experience as evidence that the foundation for such a force already exists.
Zelenskyy argued that Europe’s future should rest solely in European hands, stating, “I really believe that time has come. The armed forces of Europe must be created so that Europe’s future depends only on Europeans.” He expressed concern about potential US reluctance to intervene in European security threats, echoing sentiments expressed by other leaders regarding the need for a continental military force.
He warned that Russia is not interested in peace and is not preparing for dialogue. Zelenskyy also revealed intelligence suggesting Russia plans to deploy troops to Belarus under the guise of training exercises, posing a “direct threat” to NATO countries. He asserted that Putin views Belarus as a Russian province.
“This (Russia) is not a country that wants peace. It is not preparing for dialogue,” Zelenskyy warned.
Earlier, Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine would require a doubled military size if it is denied NATO membership.
Zelenskyy met with US Vice President JD Vance to discuss a potential peace deal, emphasising Ukraine’s need for “security guarantees” before engaging in talks with Russia. He stressed to NBC News the crucial importance of continued US military support for Ukraine’s survival, both now and in the face of potential future Russian aggression.
These remarks come against the backdrop of repeated statements by US President Donald Trump ruling out the stationing of US troops in Ukraine to counter Russian aggression.
