Washington: US President Donald Trump made a statement on trade policies during a press conference ahead of his meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Trump said that the United States will no longer tolerate trade imbalances and would impose reciprocal tariffs on countries that levy tariffs on American goods.
Speaking about the new approach, Trump said, “On trade, I have decided that for the purpose of fairness, I’ll charge reciprocal tariffs – meaning, whatever countries charge the United States of America, we will charge them – no more, no less. They charge us with tax and tariffs, it’s very simple we will charge them with exact tax and tariffs.” “India has more tariffs than nearly any other country,” said US President Donald Trump.
Trump’s statement comes just before a bilateral meeting with PM Modi, where trade is expected to be a key point of discussion. India, which has been engaged in trade talks with the US on issues like tariffs on agricultural products, medical devices, and digital taxes, could face implications from Trump’s hardline stance.
