Islamabad: An earthquake measuring 4.0 on the Richter Scale struck Pakistan in the early hours of Saturday. As per the National Center for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake was felt at around 1:44 AM. There has however been no report of any damage or casualty so far.
According to officials, the epicenter of the earthquake was recorded at a depth of 10 kilometres, at latitude 29.67N and longitude 66.10E. The latest earthquake was reported days after a 4.2 magnitude earthquake was reported on May 5. At the time, the NCS said that tremors occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers, which increased chances of aftershocks.
The same day, another earthquake was reported in Afghanistan with a magnitude of 4.2 at 12:35 pm IST. Before this, another earthquake was reported in the country with a Richter Scale of 4.4 on April 30 at 9:58 p.m. The epicenter of this earthquake was located at 31.08N and 68.84E at a depth of 50 kilometres.
It may be noted that Pakistan lies on top of several major fault lines, which makes the country one of the world’s most seismically active countries. It is located near the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates, making it increase the chances of powerful earthquakes. Provinces like Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan are especially vulnerable.
