Washington: Close to 63 million people in the US are under some weather advisory or warning across the country, as a massive winter storm led to the possibility of the “heaviest snowfall in a decade” to several regions. As many as 6 states have declared emergency due to prevailing weather condition
Among six states here emergency have been imposed include Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia, Kansas, Arkansas, and Missouri. Snow and ice affected the movements of vehicles in several parts of Kansas, western Nebraska and Indiana. Earlier, the National Weather Service had issued a warning for a winter storm for Kansas and Missouri. The warning was further extended to New Jersey for Monday and early Tuesday.
‘Region may be experiencing heaviest snowfall in 10 years’
“For locations in this region that receive the highest snow totals, it may be the heaviest snowfall in at least a decade,” the weather service said. Notably, the polar vortex of ultra-cold air is usually seen around the North Pole. People in the region experience intense cold when the vortex stretches towards the south.
In Indiana too, with snow fully covering most parts of the region, the police urged the people to stay off the roads. In Kentucky too, 19.5 cm) of snow was recorded on Sunday, shattering the previous record of 7,6 cm in 1910. Several areas of New York 0.9 meters or more of snow that was expected to last until Sunday afternoon.
Stormy weather likely in Ohio Valley
According to officials, stormy weather is likely to move into the Ohio Valley and reach the Mid-Atlantic states late Sunday or Monday, with a hard freeze expected in Florida. Notably, trees were also damaged across the deep south due to gutsy wind. Tornado warnings were issued in Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi.
